Open workshop using wood from trees damaged in the earthquake: ‘MOTTAINAI x Everyone’s Forest’

Since the earthquake, Tokyo Board Industries, a company specializing in processed wooden construction materials,
has been making particle board using demolition wood from Tagajo City, Miyagi.

The size 36 particle board is made exclusively from wood damaged by the earthquake that is chipped and compressed.
What was once rubble became a canvas for workshop participants. At five venues in Tokyo,
trees were painted onto the particle board in four steps creating a ‘forest’ from the once damaged wood.
Workshops consisted of the following four steps.

• 100 adults and children were asked to draw a forest of trees.
• The outlines of the trees were traced onto the particle board.
• The trees were painted.
• Fruit, flowers and animals were cut from separate sheets and stuck onto the forest.

The project, titled ‘Everyone’s Forest’ was completed during the summer vacation,
with participants enjoying a picnic within the ‘forest’ on the 8th floor of Hikarie in Shibuya.

Tokyo Spice Chief of Onagawa Curry which provided free cooked meals after the earthquake came and held a
‘curry kitchen’ at the event. Participants could watch video letters and learn more about the post earthquake reality.
All proceeds from the ‘curry kitchen’ were put towards Great East Japan Earthquake relief efforts via the Mainichi Welfare Foundation.
